The Alverno Varsity Soccer team has been plowing through the competition to reach the CIF Championship game. Their first CIF match resulted in a 11-0 score boosting them to the quarterfinals after a first game bye. Their second game left them once again with a deserved victory, taking the game 6-1. The only goal scored against them that game was by penalty kick.
Today Alverno took on CAMS at the Home Depot Center's David Beckham Academy Field at 3pm. The team came out with a fire that was inspired by the late Frankie Russo, who would have undoubtedly been in attendance. The girls knew that Frankie was watching from above and dedicated the game to him.
The first half proved to be competitive, with the half time whistle leaving the game at a 1-1 tie. Alverno dominated offensively taking numerous shots, with sophomore Maha Abdallah scoring Alverno's first goal. The second half was a sure turn around and very exciting to watch. Abdallah, after getting clipped from the behind on a play jumped up letting the ref know her feelings on the foul. She then did some damage to the scoreboard by taking the free kick and placing the ball in perfect position. It was a spectacular moment that left the game 2-1 and spurred the Alverno team to score two more goals. Alverno won the match 4-1 and will head to the Championship after this emotional victory. With senior leaders Ameena and Marina, this incredibly skilled team goes into Friday's final with confidence and excitement. Alverno be proud of your team, they really stepped up!
Whether it was the huge Alverno fan crowd, filled with students, families, teachers, staff, pom poms and signs, or the knowledge that Frankie would have so badly wanted the team to win this game, the immense emotion resulted in a beautiful win.
